Evidence

The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office preserves and maintains evidence that comes into its possession for the purpose of proving guilt or innocence in a court of law. It also receives found or recovered stolen property for safekeeping. The handling and storage of evidence is a very serious matter. If not done properly, many taxpayer dollars are wasted with investigations and court costs. Approximately 5,000 pieces of new property come into the department each year and it is staffed by one full-time employee.

This unit serves the citizens of this and other counties, the courts, District Attorney’s office, Juvenile and Corrections departments, patrol, detectives, the OSP crime lab, lawyers, insurance companies and federal agencies.

The Evidence Unit supports investigations, assists in successful prosecution at criminal and civil trials, facilitates the timely return of property to its rightful owners and, in doing so, maintains the public's confidence and trust.

A great deal of found property comes into the Sheriff’s Office. We do our best to locate the owners of found or recovered stolen property that comes into our custody. You can help us by maintaining a current listing of items in your residence with their description and serial number or take pictures of your valuables and store them on a CD. Remember to keep a printed copy of this list in case of theft of your computer. NEVER keep your only copy of this list or your pictures on your computer, because, in the event that your home is burglarized, your computer is a target for thieves.
